Growing up Mexican American, I saw the image of the Virgin de Guadalupe everywhere. La Virgencita, as my abuelita called her, was my grandma’s most cherished idol as she had multiple images of her in the home. La Virgencita was the guardian of the home and her statue sat mounted and adorned on top of her fridge, and every morning and night my grandma, without fail, would leave her a burning candle. As an adult, I developed an interest and an admiration for tattoos; they, and the people who make them, are my idols. In this piece, I paid homage to my abuelita, a woman who defines a large piece of my childhood. I purposefully designed her in an American traditional style in order to reclaim a style/culture/community that was once closed off to people that look like me within tattooing.
